Fundraising at a "For Profit" Organization
Q: I am responsible for fundraising in a "for profit" independent school. How should I approach the fundraising issue when people do not get the tax deduction with their giving? Tracey in Texas A: Stress your school's mission with stories, testimonials, etc., to make sure that people know who you are and what you do. Let them know about the good work you are doing with the children you serve. After all, you want people to support your organization and stay with you over the long term because they believe in what you're doing. You should let people know that the school is for profit and that their gifts are not tax deductible, but if you express your organization's plans and accomplishments clearly, you will attract people who care much more about supporting your mission than about getting a tax break.
