Q: We have two large multiple-year pledges outstanding from our Ask Event. We have invoiced these donors and called them, but are not receiving payment. What should we do?

A: This sort of difficulty underscores the importance of the cultivation process. What is most important for you right now is that you get back in communication with your donors. For those who are not paying off their pledges, I recommend that you send a letter reminding them once again that their pledges are due, and do your best to get them re-involved with your organization.

On a broader scale, you will want to check and make sure you are doing enough cultivation of all of your donors throughout the year—are you holding regular Free Feel-Good Cultivation Events? Are you in contact with your major donors on a regular (at least monthly) basis? If you stay in constant personal communication with your donors (inviting them to events, asking for their advice, etc.), they will be very unlikely to ignore their commitment; in fact, they may pay off their pledges early and consider increasing their gifts.
