Implementing the Model at a Public Broadcasting Station

Q: How would you recommend we implement the model at our public broadcasting station?

Shannon in Georgia

A: Most public broadcasting stations have an enormous base of members who have come to expect gifts and prizes for their loyal membership. I recommend you begin with your top tier members and implement our Know-Thy-Donor Program. (See our Designing a Know-Thy-Donor Program PDF White Paper for instructions. You can access our free downloads page from the White Papers link in every issue of the Benevon E-New$.)

First, telephone each donor to thank them for their gift. Tell the donor that your station is trying to learn more about "members like you."

Then ask them, "Why do you give to our station in the first place? What is it about our work that has had you continue to give over the years? Is there any advice you have for us about how we could be doing a better job?"

Then follow up with an invitation to a Point of Re-Entry Event.

For those who attend, make the standard Follow-Up Call within one week of the Point of Re-Entry and begin to cultivate the person based on their particular areas of interest.

Over time, if you stick to this system of calling, thanking, gathering feedback, inviting your members to special Point of Re-Entry Events, and then getting them on the Benevon cycle, you will convert many members to lifelong donors.
