Involving Your Board in the Point of Entry Process

Q:  We are working on designing our Point of Entry®. How can we involve our board members in the Point of Entry Event process?

Calvin in Delaware

A:  After you have done a dry-run Point of Entry Event for your staff, have your first real Point of Entry be a "demo, kick-the-tires" Point of Entry for your board members. Tell them you would like to start a program of tours, open houses, or house parties to spread the word in the community about your good work. Even though you know that they already know about the organization, you want their advice. Tell them that you want to get their feedback first.

Tell your board that these events are strictly for informational purposes and that no one will be asked to give money at the Point of Entry. Encourage them to invite someone close to them who may never have visited your program before. Perhaps it will be someone in their family who has heard a lot about your organization but has never seen it firsthand. By having a few real guests at the "demo" Point of Entry, it is less likely to feel like a standard board meeting. People will be on their best behavior for "company," and they will be watching the reactions of the real guests.

Be sure to follow up with each board member after the Point of Entry, just as you would with all of your guests. Follow the Five-Step Follow-Up Call process and listen closely to their feedback. Try to make the improvements and modifications per their suggestions.
